Electrolytic capacitor

An electrolytic capacitor is a type of capacitor typically with a larger capacitance per unit volume than other types, making them valuable in relatively high-current and low-frequency electrical circuits. This is especially the case in power-supply filters, where they store charge needed to moderate output voltage and current fluctuations, in rectifier output, and especially in the absence of rechargeable batteries that can provide similar low-frequency current capacity. They are also widely used as coupling capacitors in circuits where AC should be conducted but DC should not; the large value of the capacitance allows them to pass very low frequencies. The electrolytic capacit...

How do I know when a capacitor is bad?

The air conditioner unit will not come on. Either the outdoor fan does not run, the compressor does not run, or both the fan and the compressor do not run. The breaker on the outdoor unit has been checked and reset, but the outdoor unit still does not come on. You can hear a little humming sound inside the unit which is the low voltage contactor humming. The capacitor may be swollen or even blown apart with capacitor oil. When identifying the capacitor that you have, you might see the rating stated in “MFD” or “UF.” “MFD” and “UF” meaning microfarad rating. What does a capacitor do?

Alternating current (AC)  alternates the voltage from zero to 110 or from zero to 220 volts 60 cycles per second. The run capacitor throws a stored charge in the motor when the voltage reaches the zero point and keeps the voltage steady instead of all the up and down voltage drops. This enables the motor or compressor to run smoothly and more efficient. This is easily seen with an ocilliscope where you can see the AC current going up and down at 60 cycles per second. How to Check Capacitor on heat Pump ?

the unit was working fine and now the fan will run but the compressor will not kick on. I have check the contact opening and there is no blockage between the points. I have had “critters” If critters have gotten in the movement of the contactor it is possiable that the magnetic coil that pulls the contacts together is burned even if they have been cleaned out. read the voltage (on the coil section of your compressor contactor) and uses a meter to see if that proper voltage is on the coil. If it is..the coil is bad. I would replace the contactor. But if the voltage is not on the coil, there are other devices that will open the voltage to the contactor coil. they are w...

Hard start kit for air conditioner

I was told by one a/c company owner/tech that hard start kits are a good idea for all a/c’s. He said that it assists the compressor on start up and essentially makes it not work so hard initially. Two benefits besides being good for the compressor were that it reduced the dimming of the house lights you might notice when the compressor starts and it also reduces the electrical load on start up which might allow you to use a medium sized generator (5000-6000w) to run an a/c. Is any of this true or somewhat true? Thanks in advance.Single phase motors have zero starting torque. To overcome this problem a start winding is added and start capacitors are used to produce some ph...

What is a hard start kit?

A hard start kit is designed to assist your compressor on start-up. If your inside air conditioning coil is located more than 50 feet from your outside condensing unit, you probably need a hard start kit to assist your compressor when it turns on. You see, your air conditioner works like a pump circulating the refrigerant throughout your system. The harder the pump has to work the less efficient it is and the more likely it is to break down. A hard start kit helps your air conditioner when it needs help most, when it first starts up and has to begin the pumping process. The addition of a hard start kit will extend the life of your compressor, which could save you from the high c...
